Chinese designers set themselves the goal of the ZTZ-99 to create a machine that would be able to match Western designs like the Leopard 2A6 or M1A1 Abrams. The ZTZ-99 was created as a successor to the Type 85 tank and a very far-reaching development of the ZTZ-98G vehicle. In addition, the tank's armament consists of 2 machine guns: cal. The vehicle is armed with a single 125mm ZPT-98 tank gun. The ZTZ-99 is powered by a 1500 HP diesel engine. So far (2018), approximately 300-500 tanks of this type have been produced. The first prototypes of the vehicle were probably created in the mid-1990s, and serial production started in 2001 continues to this day. Overall, I would recommend this kit as a fun, relatively simple, cost effective choice for a modern battle tank. The ZTZ-99 or Type 99 is a modern 3rd generation Chinese Main Battle Tank. Unfortunately, no figures come with the kit, but that seems to be standard practice for HobbyBoss/Trumpeter tank kits. The two turret hatches feature detail on the inside, but there is no other interior detail. The individual track links were quite tedious to remove and clean up, but looked good once on the tank. The kit did not include several items, particularly, no clear lens parts for the various vision blocks and optics and no extra fuel barrels for the rear of the tank. Instructions and full painting/decal placement guide are well done and were easy to follow. Decal markings are minimal - only two Chinese stars and a range of numbers for the turret sides. This kit includes a fret of photo-etched brass containing screens for the engine exhaust. As with several HobbyBoss aircraft kits that I have built, the molding and fit of parts are excellent. The HobbyBoss ZTZ 99A is a well detailed, top notch kit that was a pleasure to build.
